Form Meets Function To Deliver A State-Of-The-Art Mechanical Penthouse

Mechanical Penthouse – Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center

To provide continued state of the art utility support for its current operating rooms, Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center chose c|a architects Infrastructure Studio to design a new air handler and chiller solution. A new rooftop penthouse mechanical room was added, and the team interrupted the chilled water loop, integrating a new chiller in order to add a critical loop. The existing structure was reinforced for vertical load and a lightweight metal enclosure was created so that the entire assembly did not exceed five percent of the existing building mass. The aesthetic impact of this project on the overall campus was also carefully considered in order to create a structure that blended two distinct architectural influences.
