c|a ARCHITECTS Promotes Brent Oswald to Vice President, Business Strategy and Operations
c|a ARCHITECTS is pleased to announce the promotion of Brent Oswald, MBA to Principal - Vice President, Business Strategy and Operations. During his five years with the firm, Brent has continually advanced c|a ARCHITECTS’ mission to align our architectural and design services with the quickly evolving needs of today’s healthcare leaders.

“The healthcare industry is changing rapidly, and our clients are being called upon to do more with less,” says Brent. “Our Lean approach takes our commitment to purpose-driven design to new levels. Rebecca Blake, LEED AP, Newest Member of c|a ARCHITECTS Team
Uniting an extensive background in healthcare architecture with proven experience in interior design, Rebecca Blake joins the c|a ARCHITECTS team ready to hit the ground running. As project coordinator, she is already expanding her focus on the user experience to help ensure that every design is as functional as it is beautiful. Conducting focus groups, and translating user needs into usable yet architecturally compelling spaces, is where she excels—and what she loves most about her profession.
A native of Arizona and graduate of the University of Arizona School of Architecture, Rebecca launched her career with a large national architectural firm, where she worked in both the LA and NY offices. Her contributions as architectural technician and technical coordinator included developing real-time solutions in interior design and architectural planning for several high-profile projects, including the new Walter Reed Military Medical Center, the University of California Irvine Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital.
Following her relocation from New York to Los Angeles late last year, Rebecca now brings her talents and knowledge to c|a ARCHITECTS and our clients. She quickly immersed herself in the schematic design phase for Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center – Medical Office Building, and is also actively involved in ongoing projects for Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, with several other initiatives in the works.
Outside of the office, Rebecca and her husband remain active in every sense of the word. As he trains for marathons, she trains for triathlons. “I strive for a balanced life that allows me to work hard and play hard,” says Rebecca. “The commitment and dedication it takes to train for a triathlon is very similar to the commitment and dedication it takes to succeed in the workplace. I feel fortunate to be a part of the c|a ARCHITECTS team, and look forward to helping create functional, aesthetically appealing solutions for the evolving needs of today’s healthcare leaders—from administrators and providers to patients and their loved ones.”
c|a ARCHITECTS Welcomes Chad Kurz as Project Manager
Reinforcing our commitment to advancing healthcare architecture, and furthering our focus on neonatal and pediatric design, c|a ARCHITECTS is pleased to welcome Chad Kurz as project manager.
Chad brings nearly 20 years of experience to the c|a ARCHITECTS team. During the past several years, he has focused much of his efforts on the evidence-based design of healthcare facilities for children. This area of expertise requires not only creating healing spaces to support the needs of growing minds and bodies, but also safe and comfortable environments for extended support systems, including friends and family.
Camouflaging intimidating medical equipment, regulating indoor light exposure, integrating soothing distractions like graphics, sculptures and picture windows, and installing infection control touch points while still making an environment feel warm and inviting are just a few of his areas of expertise.
“Any successful project is defined by how we turn challenges into opportunities,” says Chad. “My role with c|a ARCHITECTS presents a unique opportunity to even better meet the evolving needs of today’s healthcare leaders, especially those specializing in pediatric care. We deliver forward-reaching architectural and design solutions without sacrificing the schedule, scope or budget.”

c|a ARCHITECTS Welcomes Carina Mills to Infrastructure Studio
ARCHITECTS is pleased to welcome Carina Mills, AIA, as project
manager for the Infrastructure Studio. In this role, she focuses exclusively
on infrastructure installations and upgrades for leading healthcare
facilities of all types and sizes.

From a young age she was captivated by how structures were built as well as the infrastructure that made them work. While growing up in Eugene, Ore., she spent hours in basements as she accompanied her father, a facilities engineer, on weekend projects. She continues to gravitate to basements--the heart and soul of the infrastructure that powers every modern healthcare facility.
“Healthcare is a dynamic field where the equipment and technologies are continually changing,” says Carina. “It is critical that new systems are up and running quickly with minimal downtime. At the same time, being attuned and responsive to unique client needs is paramount.”
A graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Carina specializes in resolving complex technical and design issues. Prior to joining c|a ARCHITECTS, she served as project architect for multiple healthcare renovation and new construction projects.
