Bringing Sight To The Blind
Eye Research - USC Health Sciences Campus
USC needed a state-of-the-art-facility to support the development of cutting-edge technologies for bringing sight to the blind.
Using Virtual Reality (VR), the c|a team developed the optimal plan by organizing student areas, a dry lab, meeting spaces and offices around a singular circulation spine. The design takes advantage of the existing details, such as high ceilings, exposed concrete walls, columns and expansive windows, but plays with ceiling heights, lighting solutions and materials, to create a warm and welcoming appeal. Large windows in lab areas provide a sense of transparency and inclusiveness, while the use of a frosted film—transitioning from clear to opaque at eye level—addresses privacy needs. Autex panels of industrial felt suspended from the ceilings absorb reflected sound energy to resolve acoustic challenges. Artwork and pops of color complete the space, providing visual interest and serving as spatial cues.
